Gene and Dave discover a film at SXSW 2010 that you won’t want to miss.

Gene and Dave both got the opportunity and pleasure to chat with members and the program director, Javier Pena, of the Spirit of the Goodwill Band. Also joining them in their chat was producer and director, Jim Bigham, of FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE.

FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE is a documentary that celebrates the greatness living within each of us. It is about doing something with what you have, rather than focusing on what you don’t have—about taking action, of doing, of focusing on the half-full, rather than half-empty glass.

The 29 members of the Spirit of Goodwill Band face varying mental and physical abilities, such as Autism, Down Syndrome, and blindness. Music is their shared joy—it transcends age, gender, race, physical and mental abilities, and socio-economics.

FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE focuses on the few-weeks leading up to the band’s performance at the 2008 U.S. Mayor’s Convention in Miami, for an audience of over 1000 people, made up of Mayors from 440 U.S. cities, their families and the city’s special guests. They prove that success belongs to those that do something with what they have, no matter how little or how much.

The interview will be airing on Channel Austin and on this site soon. The film is very well done, and fans of The Gene and Dave Show will be delighted by this story. You can still catch it this week at SXSW.
